Ever-Increasing Glory: Continuous Transformation in 2 Corinthians 3:18

Spiritual growth is a journey, not a single event. Learn how beholding the Lord changes us from the inside out.

Many believers can point to a moment when faith became real: a prayer, a retreat, a conversation. Those moments matter. But Paul reminds us that the Christian life does not end at the beginning. "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another" (2 Corinthians 3:18).

A Verb in Progress

Look closely at the phrase "are being transformed." It describes something ongoing. Paul is not talking about a single dramatic change but about a steady, lifelong process. The Greek word is the same one used for the transfiguration of Jesus, a visible change that revealed his glory. In believers, the change is gradual and often quiet, but it is just as real.

That helps when we feel discouraged. If we expect instant perfection, every struggle looks like failure. If we understand growth as progress "from one degree of glory to another," we can celebrate small steps and keep going.

Beholding Shapes Becoming

The verse also tells us how the change happens: by beholding. We become like what we look at. If our attention is filled with outrage, comparison, and endless noise, we will gradually reflect those things. If we regularly look to Christ through Scripture, worship, prayer, and fellowship, we are shaped into his likeness.

Notice that Paul says "unveiled face." Earlier in the chapter he describes how a veil once covered Moses' face. In Christ, the veil is removed, and believers have direct access to God. Transformation is not reserved for super-saints. It is the ordinary experience of every follower.

It Is the Lord's Work

The final phrase is important: "For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." We cooperate, but we do not manufacture our own growth. This protects us from two errors: complacency, which says nothing is needed from us, and self-reliance, which says everything depends on us. The Spirit transforms, and we position ourselves to receive.

Rhythms That Support Growth

Gardeners cannot make a plant grow, but they can provide soil, water, and light. Similarly, certain habits create conditions for spiritual growth.

  • Regular time in the Word. Read slowly, ask questions, and apply one truth each day.
  • Prayer as conversation. Share honestly with God, then listen.
  • Worship. Sing, thank, and remember who God is, alone and with others.
  • Community. Growth happens in relationships where we are known, encouraged, and gently challenged.
  • Service. Giving ourselves away reveals what is still being formed within us.

Seasons Matter

Growth is not always visible. There are seasons of rapid change and seasons of rooting, much like in nature. A winter season may feel unproductive, but roots are deepening below the surface. Trust that God is at work even when you cannot measure it.

Avoiding the Plateau

Some believers drift into a comfortable plateau, content with what they have already experienced. The antidote is a posture of expectation. Ask regularly, "Where is God inviting me to grow now?" It might be in forgiveness, generosity, courage, or patience. Each answer is another step along the road.

Reflect and Pray

  1. In which area of life do you sense God inviting you to grow next?
  2. What are you regularly beholding, and is it shaping you well?
  3. Who could walk beside you for the next season of growth?

Spirit of God, keep changing us into the likeness of Christ, one degree of glory at a time.

You Were Not Meant to Grow Alone

Transformation often accelerates in the context of a small group. When others pray for you, ask thoughtful questions, and share their own journey, you are reminded that the process is shared.

If you are ready to move from casual faith to intentional growth, we invite you to join a discipleship group at Lord's Instruments Ministries. Together we will behold, be changed, and encourage one another toward ever-increasing glory.
